Factors to consider when purchasing battery for trolling motor

1. The battery type

There are available two types of deep-cycle 12-volt batteries that are recommended for trolling motors. The first one is Lead Acid Wet-Cell, and the second one is AGM Batteries.

The deep-cycle batteries are designed for discharging smaller amounts of current. They are not for an extended period and not for more frequent recharging.

a. Lead Acid

The lead-acid batteries are maintenance-free, which first emerged in the mid-1970s. Valves have been increased to control venting during the charge and fast discharge, which let go of gases if pressure builds up.

It does not submerge the plates in a liquid form, and the electrolyte is impregnated into a moistened separator. The separator is designed like nickel-based and lithium-based battery systems.

Its capacity readings are higher at a slower discharge than at the 1C-rate. A lead-acid battery can provide high pulse currents of several C if done for hardly any seconds.

The lead-acid battery is suitable as a starter battery or SLI (starter-light-ignition). Unfortunately, the sulfuric acid content makes lead-acid batteries environmentally unfriendly.

Lead-acid batteries are classified into three usages: Automotive (SLI), motive power (deep cycle or traction), and stationary (UPS).

b. AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat

AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat battery technology became popular in the early 1980s for UPS, vehicles, and military aircraft. The battery is spill-proof because a fiberglass mat absorbs the sulfuric acid.

c. Lithium battery

The anode makes the electric current flow through an external circuit. When the battery is charged, lithium ions are stored in the anode. The electrolyte is formed of additives, solvents, and salts. It serves as the conduit of lithium ions between the anode and cathode.

2. Amperage Hour Rating or reserve capacity

An essential factor to consider is the amount of reserve amp draw. The reserve capacity is the amount of time you own until the battery drops to its minimum voltage.

You can compare a battery’s amperage hour rating to a car’s gas tank. A battery with a 115 amp hour rating will beat a 100 amp-hour rated battery in terms of endurance.

A 100 amp hour rated battery can provide 100 amp hours of current. If a trolling motor runs at low speed and pulls only four amps, the battery will last up to 25 hours. (100 amp hour rating / 4 amps = 25 hours).

If the trolling motor is pulling 40 amps, the battery will last for 2.5 hours (100 amp hour rating / 40 amps = 2.5 hours). It is recommended to use a 100 amperage hour rating for trolling motors, a Group 27 rating, and 175 minutes of Reserve Capacity (RC).
